The Rhizome & the River

The Platonic-Christian ascent — as a web with no root, and as a river through time.

The Rhizome & the River

A web with no root — and a river through 2,500 years.

This maps the tradition we traced together: the Platonic ascent, taken up and transformed by Christian revelation. From Plato through Philo, Clement, Origen, Athanasius, Gregory of Nyssa, Dionysius, Maximus, into Bonaventure and Cusa, and out to the moderns.

The Rhizome shows the connections — who taught whom, what tensions run between them, and the gold threads of resonance where thinkers centuries apart share one idea. The River shows the same figures flowing down through time in parallel streams. Toggle between them.

Watch for the one seam the whole thing turns on: where the ascent's engine — negation, the return to the One — tips from privation (a lack the Good rescues) into productive negation (a God who needs the dark to become Himself). Cusa is the last on the near side. Böhme is the far.
